Nice Lawn or Green Concrete?

Written by on July 2, 2008

lawn

I’ll be the first to admit a nice green lawn is very nice to look at, but other than the color how green is it? You will be surprised to find out just how harmful your lawn actually is. Lawns require large amount of water as wells as fertilizers, and because of their shallow roots most of the water runs off. As a result huge amount of water are needed, and pesticides run down to public drinking water supplies. How refreshing!

With the combination of grain prices and flooding in the Mid-west, it appears ethanol may be reaching the end of its small popularity. Runaway Train Never Coming Back (Video)

Written by on July 2, 2008

What you see above is a concept for a more efficient train designed by Chinese inventor Peng Yu-Lun. Yu-Lun’s idea to make this train more efficient was to eliminate all stops. At first this idea seems unrealistic, but Yu-Lun has pretty much all the details worked out.

Eco Boat

Not only does this boat have a sleek look, but it runs on a very alternative energy source. Now there’s an idea! Solve the obesity problem and the energy crisis at the same time if you just get liposuction. Did I forget to mention that this 24 meter powerboat has no carbon footprint as well? So I guess that’s three problems.

Rotating Tower

Welcome to David Fisher’s Rotating Tower. Fisher states, “Why do we want to fight the wind, let’s use the wind.” That is exactly what this completely self powered building does with its wind turbines on every floor. You can see exactly how these turbines will work in the video below. Despite how far off this idea may seem, the Rotating Tower is on the cusp of construction in Dubai, and plans are being arranged for sister building being built in Moscow and New York.

First Andalusian Zero Carbon Footprint House

Written by on June 29, 2008

Eco Architecture

With the fact that this is house has no carbon footprint aside, it still may be the most beautiful house I have ever seen. The house above is called The Eco Home, and was designed by DiseƱo Earle, and is the first zero carbon footprint in Southern Spain. The objectives of this house were to have zero carbon footprint and to reduce costs to almost a self-sufficiency level. This house has far exceeded those objectives, and has landed itself in the luxury category. Read the rest of this entry »

Nigerian Offshore Oil Crisis

Written by on June 26, 2008

Shell's offshore Bonga fpso off the coast of Nigeria

Nigeria’s oil production has reach its all time low in 25 years due to attacks from a militant group named MEND (Movement of the Emancipation of the Niger Delta), a group who believes the wealth created from Nigerian oil should provide for more than the government. MEND is recently responsible for as much as 345,000 barrels/day being unable to leave the country at times.

Onshore oil fields have been continuously attacked by this militant group, but in the past it was believed that offshore facilities were out of MEND’s reach. This was a huge relief because the future of Nigerian oil is offshore rather than onshore. In fact Nigerian offshore oil is considered to be one of the few states with geological potential to significantly increase oil production and exports. For this reason MEND’s attack on Shell’s 120 knm offshore Bonga facility(seen above) on June 19th may prove to be a serious problem. On the following day MEND also destroyed a key Chevron pipeline. Keep reading for more information on this crisis
